Ars Perfecta – The Perfect Art of Renaissance Polyphony and the life of Giovanni P. da Palestrina presented by Christine Gevert. Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was of one of the greatest composers of all times. Crescendo’s founding Artistic Director Christine Gevert explores the development and significance of vocal polyphony in music through an exploration of Palestrina’s life and work. Polyphony had a major impact upon western classical music and there are parallels with other contemporary art forms, such as painting, architecture, garden design and the philosophy. This talk gives the background to Crescendo’s upcoming concerts which feature sacred vocal works by Palestrina and his contemporaries and students Orlando di Lasso, Giovanni Maria Nanino, Ruggiero Giovanelli and Gregorio Allegri.
Gevert has taught and performed music in Europe, South America and the United States. Steeped in early music she has performed at early music festivals including Washington, Amherst, Boston, Narol, Poland, at the Metropolitan Museum and elsewhere. She is currently music director at Trinity Episcopal Church, Lime Rock CT, founder and artistic director of Crescendo and her own baroque ensemble Les Inégales.
