Event Details

Join Darlene Kascak (Schaghticoke Tribal Nation) and Irene Norman (Mohawk descent) from the Institute for American Indian Studies for a presentation on the context and history of the U.S. War of Independence with a special focus on local Indigenous communities.

Commemorations of the 250th anniversary of the United States’ War for Independence reveal a complex history for Indigenous communities. Indigenous Nations have existed as sovereign entities since long before the United States of America, with more than 12,500 years of history for local tribes. Indigenous communities were integral to creating the conditions for this conflict and participated on both sides.

The Declaration of Independence and the ensuing war also caused upheaval for many Indigenous communities, which continues to have a lasting legacy today.

Registration is required.
