Make the most of a winter Tuesday morning! Join us to watch director Howard Hawks's 1941 comedy classic, "Ball of Fire."
This fast-paced screwball comedy stars Barbara Stanwyck as a sassy nightclub singer who stirs up the lives of seven sheltered bookish professors compiling an encyclopedia. Chaos and romance ensue as the chair of the project, played by Gary Cooper, clashes with Stanwyck's former beau. It's a send-up of academic life with sparkle and wit, unforgettable characters, and nightclub scenes featuring Stanwyck in sequins and Gene Krupa and his orchestra.
- ... a wholly ingratiating lark, and so pleasant is its spoofing of the professional pose, so comprehensive is its handling of the modern vernacular and so altogether winning are Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck in it that it had the customers jumping with enjoyment at the [Radio City] Music Hall yesterday. -- Bosley Crowther, The New York Times, January 16, 1942
Screen play by Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder, based on an original story by Mr. Wilder and Thomas Monroe, directed by Howard Hawks, produced by Samuel Goldwyn, released through RKO-Radio Pictures
