Dr. Childs will discuss the current Covid 19 pandemic and  the two other significant  coronavirus outbreaks within the last two decades, SARS and MERS.  He looks at why these viruses are more readily controlled that Covid 19, making them less concerning. He traces how these zoonotic pathogens cross species to ultimately cause human infection and disease and what sort of future expectations and projections we may experience. Dr Childs looks at  potential game changers  such as vaccines and other drugs but focuses on the  importance of  contact tracing, isolation and quarantine. He will touch upon historical examples of flu epidemics.  There will be lots of time for questions and answers during and post presentation.

Senior Scientist Dr James Childs  is Lecturer in Epidemiology  at the Yale School of Medicine. His primary area of research includes the ecological dynamics of directly-transmitted zoonotic viruses, including the hantaviruses, arenaviruses and rabies, and vector-borne bacteria, including rickettsia, bartonella and borrelia. Prior to coming to Yale in 2004, Dr. Childs served as the Chief of the Viral and Rickettial Zoonoses Branch at CDC.  He was postdoctoral Fellow at the United States Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases after earning his doctorate at Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.
