History is written by the victors, but what about the one third of the colonists in America who opposed the rebellion?
Hear about other side of history, the conviction and difficult choices of those who were loyal to the king, crown, and existing form of government.
Travel in time with Tom Key to 1830 and experience history as told by Ezra Curruthers, a retired school master in a small English village. As a young man in 1780, this native of the province of North Carolina and son of a farmer, graduated from the College of William and Mary, and after much serious consideration joined Lord Cornwallis’ army which was trying to bring the Carolinas to support of the Crown.
We’ll look beyond the stereotype of the enemy Redcoat to explore the complex political, economic, theological, and personal reasons why so many Americans risked everything to remain British, and what happened to them during and after the War of Independence.
This is a Salisbury READS event, presented in partnership with the Salisbury Association Historical Society in connection with the community READ of Revolution Song by Russell Shorto. To learn more and see the whole calendar of events, please visit Salisbury READS.
