Dr. Goddard, Minister of Salisbury Congregational Church thought of asking the Salibsbury Cathedral in Salisbury, England to donate a stone to be placed in a position of honor over the fireplace in the Reading Room of the new library. A corespondence between Dr. Goddard and Mr. R.A. Maldon formed in 1893 and the cathedral gave its blessings. The 15th century carved stone had been donated to the Salisbury Cathedral by the Hungerford family, a prominate Wiltshire family and early benefactor to the cathedral. The stone had been in the Hungerford Chapel, now extent (still standing). The carving is divided into sections: the first and third depict a chained raven, the badge of the Hungerford family. The middle section displays a lion with three fleur de lis, the badge of the Holland family who married into the Hungerford family.
