Program Description
Event Details
Whether you've read this year's Salisbury READS selection, Revolution Song, are still reading, or just want to learn more about our own local Revolutionary War history, we welcome you to join author and award-winning educator Peter Vermilyea for this book and history discussion.
Peter Vermilyea will lead the discussion, respond to your questions, and connect our own local history to the events and themes in REVOLUTION SONG by Russell Shorto, an acclaimed narrative history of the American Revolution seen through the eyes of six diverse historical individuals.
We’ll explore how our area and communities played a role in the broader struggle for independence while reflecting on the principles, causes, and events that united and divided people during the struggle to found a new nation.
Registration is required. Please click the green Register button below.
Reading REVOLUTION SONG is encouraged but not required. Participants are invited to come with questions or ideas for discussion.
Peter Vermilyea, an award-winning history educator and author, teaches at Housatonic Valley Regional High School and for the University of Connecticut. His new book, Litchfield County in the Revolutionary War, will be published in the Spring of 2026.
Copies of REVOLUTION SONG are available for borrowing at the library. For the free audio version, click this link to Libby and be ready to enter your Scoville Library card number.

REVOLUTION SONG by Russell Shorto is the 2025-2026 selection for Salisbury READS, an annual collaborative project that encourages the entire community to read a selected book together and engage in discussions and related programs. Salisbury READS is presented in partnership with the Salisbury Association, the Troutbeck Symposium, and the Salisbury Forum, in connection with Salisbury Commemoration 250 and CT 250.
