Workshop 1: ENTRELAC, alternate Wednesdays, February 25 & March 11
- Wednesday, February 25, 2:00 to 4:00 PM, Knitting Entrelac
The architecture of entrelac is different from that of other types of knitting. Entrelac fabric is composed of tiers of blocks that are set on their points, forming diamond shapes. Each block is worked individually and joined to its neighbor as it is knit. Using a self-striping yarn eliminates the need for changing colors as the blocks seem to magically alternate in color as you go. In this first workshop we will learn the structure of Entrelac and how to knit the basic six elements of the design. - Wednesday, March 11, 2:00 to 4:00 PM, Knitting Embellished Entrelac
Just when you thought entrelac was a color knitting technique, Bruce will show you how to embellish your elements in single color to create a magnificent knitted fabric. - MATERIALS FOR ENTRELAC WORKSHOPS
Bring 100 yds worsted weight yarn in self-striping color for basic entrelac and in a solid color for embellished entrelac. Bring needles that give you a stockinette fabric that you like. Please swatch at home to save time in class. If you would like to knit the entrelac scarf the long way (highly recommended as it will be both beautiful and unique as the self-striping yarn will cause color changes throughout the long row) then you will need a circular needle in your size that is at least 32” long.
Workshop 2: CABLES, alternate Wednesdays, March 25 & April 8
In two cable workshops, Bruce will show you how to create two beautiful, cabled fabrics: one thick and lush, the other more delicate and sophisticated. Both patterns provided are from his books BOYFRIEND SWEATERS and KNITS MEN WANT. Don’t worry if you’ve never done cables before, Bruce will review basic cabling, how to read a cable chart, teach you how to cable without traditional cabling needles
- Wednesday, March 25, 2:00 to 4:00 PM, Knitting Reversible Large Cables
Two pairs of cables, each turned on a different row, creating a soft warm waterfall of yarn. Self-striping yarn looks best in this fabric. - Wednesday, April 8, 2:00 to 4:00 PM, Knitting Reversible Small Cables
We’re going to make our cabled fabric a bit more sophisticated in this second workshop. Here we’ll work with a lighter weight yarn and make 5 smaller cables. For this fabric you’ll want Aa sport weight yarn in solid or tonal shades. Materials Again, please swatch at home to save time in class. You’re looking needles that will give you a K1 P1 fabric that you like. Please bring a size-appropriate cable needles or a double point needle in the same size as your project needles. - MATERIALS FOR CABLE WORKSHOPS
For the heavier weight cables please have an aran weight (or a heavy worsted) self-striping, or variegated yarn along with needles that give you a slightly loose K1 P1. Please swatch at home to save time in class. Please bring size-appropriate cable needles or a double-point needle in the same size as your project needles.
